Gunkl & Breinschmid

Gunkl is a cabaret artist. Georg Breinschmid is a composer. Both master the bass. One does it well, the other even better. Gunkl and Georg Breinschmid have a mission. It is no coincidence that one is considered the most meticulous turner of the cabaret scene, crafting pointillistically nuanced nested sentences with various twists, while the other is a virtuoso musician with a quirky inclination towards Dadaism and raucous comedy. His passion for linguistic nonsense is also reflected in his Facebook thread for "freshly brewed nonsense," which already has nearly 30,000 comments. However, the two language-playing artists do not approach their artistic material uncritically, as language is not only a means of communication but also the cause of many misunderstandings. Furthermore, it is a willing servant of lies and propaganda. Can one actually lie with the language of music? Is the Canarian whistled language more tactful than Morse code? Can dialects be condensed into musical form? Is Appenzeller dialect perhaps just onomatopoeia devoid of any semantics? The two artists ponder such questions and more today in "Thoughts."
