5/8erl in Ehr’n are a rare species. It is no coincidence that this band transcends generations, genres, and bubbles, functioning in mainstream radio, on alternative stations, in theaters, and at swimming pools. It is their radical search for what connects us—a sound that blends Aretha Franklin, Buena Vista Social Club, and Helmut Qualtinger, with an eye on the poison of our time and what serves as balm for the soul. For this, they have developed their own musical language: Viennese Soul.
On their seventh album BURN ON!, 5/8erl in Ehr’n are both patients and remedies. They address the affliction of those who are constantly on edge but can still tie their shoes. In nine songs, they juxtapose the relentless stress of an exhausted society with interpersonal connections. What is good for us as human beings? The simple sentence "Let’s talk for a moment, let’s just give ourselves some time" feels radical, while the line "Didn’t do anything together, neither cried nor laughed" feels very familiar. Perhaps this is why the band resonates so deeply, as they often quietly and softly touch upon what is so often overlooked. 5/8erl in Ehr’n are masters of the snug attack. With their musical interventions, one wants to lie on the beach, have positive sex under a cozy blanket, breathe out long and deeply, and cry in silence. No one sings "Modesty" as beautifully as they do. How can songs be so light-footed yet so sharp at the same time?
For 19 years and over 1000 concerts, Clemens Wenger, Robert Slivovsky, Hanibal Scheutz, Miki Liebermann, and Max Gaier have taken the time to grow together—under an independent label, in DIY mode, with the audience at their backs. They are becoming increasingly gentle in the creation of their albums: listening to each other instead of imposing their will. Less self-centeredness, but more and more curiosity for the world of others, creating space for everyone. One can burn for that too. BURN ON! is a step over the threshold, a mirror image, a question mark, and a healing drug.
