Eighty years after the end of World War II, there is still no work that connects the formative phases of Austrian post-war history. The key years 1945, 1955, 1995, and 2015—marking the end of the war, the State Treaty, EU accession, and the refugee crisis—represent crucial turning points. This book addresses the developments arising from these events through well-founded historical analyses, with a focus also on Lower Austria, and offers a glimpse into the immediate future. This journey through time is accompanied by interviews with about twenty contemporary witnesses, including Renate Welsh, Wolfgang Schüssel, Brigitte Ederer, Franz Vranitzky, Gunnar Prokop, Erwin Wurm, and Rita Nitsch. Contributions come from Barbara Stelzl-Marx, Cornelia Travnicek, Paulus Hochgatterer, Stefan Karner, Christian Rapp, Gerhard Jelinek, and Tristan Horx. An introduction by Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, a foreword by the editor Danielle Spera, historical images, and current photos by Ouriel Morgensztern complete the publication.
