The "Highlight of the Year - Herbal Day" at the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing is dedicated to the ancient knowledge surrounding herbs, roots, and flowers. Amidst historical farmhouses, a world unfolds where plants have always served as home remedies, spice racks, and protection. In the gentle landscape near Graz, it becomes evident how closely nature and daily life were intertwined in Styria. Knowledgeable guides explain which herbs grew in the farmhouse gardens, how they were collected and dried, and what significance they held throughout the year. Whether it’s ointments, teas, or incense – much of what is valued today was once a natural part of life at the farm. The scent of fresh herbs fills the air as old customs and traditional knowledge are passed down. Demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on stations bring the Herbal Day to life. You can bind your own bunch of herbs between 9:00 and 11:00 AM and have it blessed afterward. Children explore plants with all their senses, while adults learn about folk medicine and regional traditions. Around 2:00 PM, the Maypole will be cut down at the inn with music and culinary delights. This creates a day that feels calm yet is full of impressions. The expansive grounds of the museum invite visitors to linger among gardens and fields. The Herbal Day showcases the richness of Styria's nature and how thoughtfully previous generations interacted with it. As part of the annual program in the Graz Experience Region, this event connects history, nature, and regional knowledge in a down-to-earth manner.
