NO GOLD FOR KALSAKA - Film KI 08/16

Film discussion with Oliver Böck (ÖJAB – Austrian Young Workers' Movement)

In a village in Burkina Faso, there is a large gold deposit. A British mining company receives mining rights from the government for the Kalsaka region and promises the villagers jobs and prosperity. This is followed by a brief, intense phase of lucrative gold extraction for the mining company. After a few years, the mine closes, and the desperate villagers find themselves stripped of their livelihoods, with destroyed and poisoned fields, no water, and insufficient compensation. Burkinabe filmmaker Michel Zongo reports on this case of exploitative resource appropriation.

NO GOLD FOR KALSAKA is an exciting documentary that guarantees a unique documentary experience through special artistic techniques, such as short interludes by a griot (a traditional West African storyteller, musician, poet, and keeper of oral tradition) and small sequences with staged Western references.

We are showing the film as part of the FERNSICHT – development policy film and dialogue evenings organized by WELTHAUS (Diocese of Linz) – which will take us on a journey to Burkina Faso.
