Art excursion to Lentos: Max Pechstein

The art excursion this time leads to the Lentos for the current exhibition: Max Pechstein. Adventure Expressionism.
The comprehensive retrospective showcases central works from several creative phases of Hermann Max Pechstein (1881-1955). In addition to Dresden and Berlin, fishing villages on the Baltic Sea were his most important places of creation. His works were presented to the Berlin audience starting in 1913 at the art salon of Fritz Gurlitt. Wolfgang Gurlitt, who had owned the gallery since 1907, also supported Pechstein's journey to the South Seas. On the Palau Islands, the expressionist painter sought a life in harmony with nature, but World War I ended his adventure prematurely. After the war, Pechstein found new creative energy in Berlin. In 1937, over 500 of his works were confiscated as part of the "Degenerate Art" campaign by the Nazis. Motifs painted from memory of his South Sea journey reappeared in his later works in vibrant colors. A Linz-specific focus highlights Pechstein's special relationship with Gurlitt. Over 100 works, including portraits, Baltic Sea images, and South Sea motifs, are being shown in Austria for the first time in this exhibition.

The guided tour will be conducted by experts from the museum on site and offers insights into the current exhibition embedded in an art historical context. The course fee does not include admission to the museum.
