Tales sound, to our modern ears, like obsolete relics of the past. Perhaps heroic tales have already annoyed us in our youth. Compared to our Bat-, Super-, and Spidermen, these great historical figures are just minor characters. The Viennese legendary heroes are more modest. Often, they are pushed into special roles merely by external circumstances, such as temptation by the devil. When presented by Michael Köhlmeier, the temporal distance to these stories disappears, and they feel relevant, even when the narrator begins with "many, many years ago."
