The Hallstatt composer Johann Michael Schmalnauer (1771-1845) has become a symbol of the unique sound of the music from the Salzkammergut region. The bliss of triads and the lively character of the melodies reflect the rugged and mountainous landscape and convey the special characteristics of the Salzkammergut people, who live in narrow valleys between the mountains and strive towards the light, up to the alpine pastures and God's grace.

Schmalnauer worked primarily as a salt master in Hallstatt and Bad Ischl and gifted his homeland with "internal" melodies that are still sung by church choirs in the Salzkammergut today, without their author being known. His Christmas Night Mass is a masterpiece of exceptional quality! Schmalnauer rightly deserves the title of the MOZART of the SALZKAMMERGUT!
