The composing salt master J.M. Schmalnauer - Concert of the Ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria with the St. Florian Boys' Choir

The Hallstatt composer Johann Michael Schmalnauer (1771-1845) has become a symbol of the unique sound of the music from the Salzkammergut region. The bliss of triads and the lively character of melody formation reflect the rugged and mountainous landscape and convey the special characteristics of the Salzkammergut people, who live in narrow valleys between the mountains and strive for light upwards to the alpine pastures and to God's grace.

Schmalnauer worked primarily as a salt master in Hallstatt and Bad Ischl, gifting his homeland with "internal" melodies that are still sung by church choirs in the Salzkammergut today, without the knowledge of their author. His Christmas Night Mass is a masterpiece of exceptional quality!

Schmalnauer rightly deserves the title - MOZART of the SALZKAMMERGUT!
