With Bach's appointment as concertmaster at the court of Weimar, he was obligated to compose a new cantata each month. The cantata "Himmelskönig sei willkommen" is considered, based on current knowledge, to be the first of his cantatas in this new role; it premiered on Palm Sunday, March 25, 1714, in the chapel of the Weimar Castle.
