Emilie Schleiss-Simandl: Pioneers of Gmunden Ceramic Art

For more than a century, women significantly shaped the development of Gmunden ceramic art. Franziska Wiesinger, née Schleiss, took care of the operation of the ceramic workshop starting in 1843. She attended markets in Linz, Krems, and Vienna and organized the daily operations of the workshop while her husband held political offices. With their son Leopold and his wife Josefine, the workshop continued to evolve and culminated in the founding of the factory in Traunleiten in 1903, which still exists today. The manufactory gained an international artistic profile through Emilie Schleiss-Simandl, a sculptor, ceramicist, and graduate of the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts.
