"The Broken Jug"

A jug was broken that night, lamented by Marthe Rull. The jug was in her daughter Eve's room, and an unknown intruder destroyed it. Eve's fiancé Ruprecht is under suspicion. Or was it his rival Lebrecht? Eve, the only one who knows the truth, remains silent. And there is a reason for that... What makes Kleist's play – premiered in 1808 under the direction of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – a comedy is the audacity with which lies are told and the truth is twisted to the point of absurdity. It is no coincidence that it is one of the most frequently performed plays on German theater stages, as it addresses contemporary issues such as corruption and abuse of power.
