Her sixth album marks a new chapter in her extraordinary career, which began when she was just 18 years old. She became famous by sending a demo to a new production company while her peers were being discovered on MySpace. Her debut album This Is the Life was one of the ten best-selling albums of 2008 and catapulted Macdonald to international fame with singles like the title track – which later made a comeback after younger generations discovered it through viral TikTok clips – and the Top-20 single "Mr. Rock and Roll." This was followed by a series of Top-10 albums, sold-out world tours, and numerous awards, including two Echo Awards (the German Grammys).

Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? showcases Macdonald at the peak of her songwriting prowess, telling stories of heartbreak, triumph, and hope. "Each song has its own little story, that's how I usually write," she explains. She vividly recalls a moment at the TRNSMT Festival in Glasgow when she looked into the crowd and realized how many young fans were in attendance: "I was afraid it would be terrible, that they wouldn't have any idea who I am – and then it turned out to be one of the greatest performances of my life," she says. "This younger generation, who had just been completely let down by Covid, the government, by everything, and they were so happy, full of life. I thought: We are in good hands."
