Folk play based on stories and a play draft by Hella Wuolijoki

"A rational person [...] has no sense of friendship anymore; he is ready to walk over his own corpse," says landowner Puntila as he tries to avoid "attacks of sobriety." Whenever he has been drinking, he becomes a friend to humanity. He quickly becomes engaged to several female workers, employs the sick out of pity, and philosophizes about life with his chauffeur Matti. Puntila's daughter Eva tries to keep her father away from alcohol and doubts her engagement to the attaché. She allies with Matti, and the two must realize that they suffer not primarily from Puntila's alcohol abuse, but above all from the rules of capitalism.

Bertolt Brecht wrote MR. PUNTILA AND HIS SERVANT MATTI together with Hella Wuolijoki in 1940/41 in Finnish exile based on her play "The Sawdust Princess."
