WORKSHOP CONTENT:
Japanese Woodblock Printing (MOKUHANGA)
combines precision and openness,
craft clarity and poetic image creation.
In this four-day workshop,
the dialogical process between
drawing, wood, water, color, and paper is the focus.
Mokuhanga is presented not as a historical technique,
but as a contemporary, open printing practice
that allows for individual visual languages.
Starting from their own designs,
participants will develop
a multi-colored woodblock print step by step.
All central aspects of Mokuhanga will be covered:
image conception and translation into the printing process,
carving the printing blocks,
the use of water-based pigments,
printing with the baren, and
the precise interplay of printing order,
transparency, and layering.
Particular attention will be paid
to manual work,
the conscious control of printing,
moisture, and color,
as well as reading the material during the work process.
The workshop understands Mokuhanga
as a decelerated printing technique
that equally demands concentration, accuracy, and
experimental openness.
Mistakes, shifts, and coincidences
are seen not as disturbances,
but as a productive part of the process.
In addition to the technical fundamentals,
the development of an independent artistic
attitude towards printmaking will also be addressed.
The work will be done individually and will be accompanied by
group discussions, demonstrations, and continuous support.
The goal is to develop a deeper understanding
of Mokuhanga
and to integrate the technique as a sustainable, contemporary printing form
into one's own artistic practice.
