The artist Monika Steiner will showcase her diverse and expressive quilts from April 29 to June 27, 2026, at Samtgasse No. 4 in Freistadt. The artist invites you to the opening on Friday, May 8 at 6 PM. Featured works include: textile collages, art quilts, wire reliefs, mixed media/textiles...
When viewing Monika Steiner's works in the mük gallery, one immediately understands why quilting is a distinct art form that has made its way into galleries and museums. As a type of textile collage, these textile works tell stories and have been making history for centuries.
Dynamics of the Thread
With her works, Monika Steiner aims to send the viewers' eyes on a quest, allowing them to discover something. Part of her works reflects the world around her. In a second approach, she layers materials, either leaving them in their natural state or processing them with various techniques. This creates a surface that becomes dynamic through a thread. The fabric becomes a carrier of meaning, while the thread and seam serve as graphic traces and artistic means. Unlike a line, the thread gives the artworks a three-dimensionality. When she uses copper wire, it imparts a relief-like structure to the works, playing with light and shadow.
Art and Cultural Mediator
Monika Steiner from Lambach has worked in education while simultaneously completing art training, including in the USA during the 1980s. She later completed training as a museum educator and as an art and cultural mediator at the University of Education in Linz. In her thesis, she also focused on quilts, whose origins date back to before Christ and can be found in China, Egypt, and India. Since 1996, Monika Steiner has also been represented internationally in exhibitions and has received numerous awards.
The exhibition at mük will be on view from April 29 to June 27, 2026, during regular opening hours – Wednesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM – with free admission. The opening will take place on Friday, May 8 at 6 PM.
