**Description**
Salzburg, 1938
The novice Maria is sent by the Mother Abbess of Nonnberg Abbey to the household of the widowed Captain Georg von Trapp to care for his seven children. With her youthful and unconventional manner, she quickly wins their hearts and shows them how much music can enrich life. The captain's tough exterior also begins to crack. A planned wedding between von Trapp and Elsa Schrader does not take place, as Maria and Georg confess their love for each other. However, the joy is overshadowed, as the new powers after Austria's annexation to the German Reich want to secure the captain's services. With a spectacular escape, the path to a new future begins, and the Trapp family leaves Austria forever for the USA, where they embark on a world career as "The Trapp Family Singers." Maria Augusta von Trapp published her tumultuous life story in her autobiography "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" in 1949, which was staged as a German homeland film in 1956. This version was also shown in America with an English-language dubbing and caught the attention of Paramount film producer Richard Halliday, who immediately acquired the English-language rights to the book. He engaged the celebrated musical authors Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II to bring the story of the "Trapp Family Singers" to the stage as a musical.
