Ancient rock layers, orchard meadows, and soils demonstrate why biodiversity is important for food, climate, and water. What do ancient rock layers, traditional apple varieties, and the soil beneath our feet have in common with a sustainable future? At stops like the quarry and the orchard meadows, it becomes clear why biodiversity is so important for our food security and what a central role soils play in agriculture, climate protection, and the water cycle. On this tour, you’ll learn about old apple varieties, discuss sustainable consumption, and explore current challenges such as soil erosion, land use, and the consequences of climate change. However, the focus isn’t limited to the region: worldwide, fertile soils are under threat, orchard populations are declining, and access to healthy food is unevenly distributed. The tour makes it clear: sustainability begins right on our doorstep—through knowledge, appreciation, and responsible action with the bigger picture in mind.
