But it is also a place where wood is transformed into coal and glass—and into money and success. A factory of dreams of rapid social advancement in which the charcoal burner’s apprentice Peter Munk also wishes to participate. The romantic Hauff tells a truly Faustian tale in which Peter Munk sells his soul for his desire for wealth and social recognition. A thirst for recognition, the longing for a different life, magic, downfall, and ultimately the realization of true values—this artistic fairy tale contains everything a great narrative needs! Wounded and wounding masculinity, exchanging a compassionate heart for one of stone, and achieving success through the ruthlessness thus gained—“The Cold Heart” is a fairy tale for adults that remains relevant to this day.
