Of Tyrants, White Women, Blood Countesses, and Other Legendary Tales.
A Quest in the Treasure Trove of Legends of Burgenland
Burgenland is rich in stories – and in female figures that stand out. No less than 20 female artists are dedicating themselves to a theme that continues to fascinate to this day: legendary women between myth and reality.
Whether it’s the alleged tyrant Rosalia von Forchtenstein, the warrior Gertraud von Weisspirach at Landsee Castle, the mysterious White Woman of Bernstein, the notorious “Blood Countess” of Lockenhaus, the controversial Countess Battyány-Thyssen of Rechnitz, or the tortured women persecuted as witches in Eberau – all these figures raise questions. What does folklore tell us about them? And what is the truth behind the legends?
An abstract artwork in vibrant pink and red tones. Free, flowing shapes and lines overlap on a textured surface, evoking movement or organic traces.
An abstract painting in shades of blue, turquoise, and green. A suggested human figure without recognizable facial features appears in flowing, blurred brush strokes. Bright and dark color traces overlap, creating a calm, almost floating atmosphere.
The route leads from north to south to six castles and palaces in Burgenland. Places where history continues to resonate: in fairy tales and legends, in historical treatises, personal memories, or scientific analyses. But as The Road of Women shows: Not every story has unfolded as it is commonly conveyed to us.
Seven female authors, six visual artists, and one musician join the performers on stage to delve deeper into the fate of women who have remained in the country’s memory due to a real or perceived taboo and who continue to captivate people’s imaginations to this day.
