Company chief Theseus is planning his wedding to Hippolyta. For the celebration, the untalented employees are to perform a play. At the same time, there is romantic chaos in Theseus's company: Hermia loves Lysander but is supposed to marry Demetrius. So she flees with Lysander into the woods. Demetrius chases after them - and Helena, who loves him, follows him. In the woods, fairies stir things up: Oberon sends Puck off with a love potion. Puck creates chaos, enchanting people and even transforming one of the actors into a donkey - who is promptly loved by the enchanted fairy queen Titania. In the end, the confusions are resolved, the right couples come together - and everything ends happily at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta.
