Metals are, in the literal sense, the building blocks of our planet. Of the 118 known chemical elements, more than 70 are metals that occur naturally in mineral deposits in the Earth's crust. Their physical and chemical properties have made them indispensable for the development of tools, buildings, and technologies over millennia. Since the Copper Age, metals have shaped entire epochs of human civilization and symbolize power, wealth, and innovation across cultures and eras.
At the center of "Element: Metal" are newly commissioned works by fifteen contemporary designers and artists. Selected for their exceptional craftsmanship, conceptual clarity, and responsible handling of material-related processes, their works perceive metal as a material shaped by labor, technique, and meaning. Historical metal objects from the collection of the castle—ranging from silverware and decorative objects to weapons and architectural fittings—offer insights into the material culture of past centuries. Together, the works tell stories of cultural exchange, technical innovation, craftsmanship, and changing power dynamics between East and West.
