The Hochthron via ferrata on the Untersberg is a long and impressive alpine endeavor. Steep limestone walls, partly exposed sections, and the length of the tour require concentration, experience, and good physical condition, but reward participants with magnificent views. The ascent takes place via the Hochthron via ferrata up to the summit area and further to the Stöhrhaus at around 1,900 m. The via ferrata is consistently varied, partly exposed, and requires a secure handling of the via ferrata set as well as safe walking in alpine terrain. The descent via the Mittagsloch is one of the most impressive and original routes on the Untersberg. It leads through steep alpine terrain and through a large natural cave opening in the mountain, making this descent unique. The path is alpine, partly exposed, and not continuously secured. Sure-footedness, freedom from vertigo, and focused walking are required until the end of the tour.
Prerequisites: This tour is aimed at experienced via ferrata climbers with sufficient stamina for a 2.5-hour approach, 2 hours of climbing time, and a 3-hour descent. Very good endurance and physical fitness, experience with via ferratas, experience in alpine terrain, sure-footedness and freedom from vertigo, and secure handling of the via ferrata set are prerequisites. Membership in the Alpine Club is required.
