Dipdii-textiles - Exhibition opening and project presentation at Gwölb

More than four million people, especially women, in Bangladesh rely on the textile industry for their livelihoods. The goal of the clothing industry is limited to meeting global standards and producing a perfect, standardized T-shirt cheaply. Economic growth is generally associated with increasing exploitation of resources. However, the wonderful and unique textile culture of Bangladesh, with its rich diversity, is overlooked and is at risk of being lost. Dipdii Textiles takes a different approach. Instead of investing many resources in development, it utilizes the time, skills, and creativity of local people. Through embroidery on recycled saris, handcrafted quilt-like textiles such as wall hangings or utility textiles are created—each piece a unique artistic creation. The project demonstrates the possibility of an alternative production model "Made in Bangladesh": participatory, sustainable, decentralized, based on local textile traditions, with each piece improving the quality of life for individual families.

Dipdii Textiles was initiated by architect Anna Heringer and master tailor Veronika Lena Lang and is being realized in collaboration with the Bangladeshi organization Dipshikha for rural development. Fashion designer Elke Burmeister-Haug is currently responsible for design and project management.

As part of the exhibition at the Galerie im Gwölb, various textiles will be displayed, each telling profound stories. Elke Burmeister-Haug will discuss the cultural and social backgrounds of the project and share this beautiful piece of sustainability with the participants of the summer symposium and all interested parties.
