**Plot**
Scotland, 16th century.
A bitter feud exists between the Catholic nobles of the Ravenswood family and the Protestant Aston family. However, Lucia and Edgardo have fallen in love despite all the enmity. When Lucia's brother Enrico discovers this, he forges a letter accusing Edgardo of infidelity and forces his sister into a marriage with Lord Arturo Bucklaw. When Edgardo bursts into the wedding and curses Lucia, everyone is horrified. In the bridal chamber, Lucia stabs Arturo with a knife. She is overtaken by delusions. As a bell announces her death, Edgardo takes his own life.
