At their first concert at the Brucknerhaus in 15 years, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conducted by Alain Altinoglu and featuring cellist Julia Hagen, juxtaposes works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky, in which exuberant joy and bitter seriousness lie closely together: Shostakovich wrote his 1st Cello Concerto in 1959 for his close friend, the "super virtuoso" Mstislav Rostropovich. Not only does a variant of the characteristic DSCH motif at the beginning of the work make the composition a veritable musical business card of Shostakovich, but the solo concerto also stands out for its biting exuberance and deep emotionality. In contrast, Stravinsky's almost 50-year-old "colorful" music for Sergei Diaghilev's ballet Petrushka, inspired by popular puppet theater, unfolds a splendidly human play of desire, seduction, and jealousy between three puppets of a juggler at a fair in St. Petersburg, where the stakes ultimately involve life and death, while the boundaries between reality and fiction blur.
