"When the work laughs / the poet weeps / and vice versa" (Thomas Bernhard) Thomas Bernhard's comedy, premiered in 1982, centers around the writer Moritz Meister, who loves to present himself as a German poet prince. It was received quite critically in the German literary scene but favorably by the audience. Hellmuth Karasek ironically noted in "Der Spiegel" that "some critics had grumpily remarked that the audience had laughed." In fact, "Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh" is a light-heartedly profound comedy full of allusions to vain poet culture and the senselessly rotating cultural industry: deep, comedic – and self-ironic at the same time.
