Antje Schrupp: Post-Patriarchal Chaos and How We Conquer Freedom with Feminism

Together with the state of Vorarlberg and femail, we are pleased to welcome political scientist Antje Schrupp and the question of how we can conquer freedom through feminism.

The era of patriarchy is over. Current political developments are not evidence of the enduring strength of patriarchy, but signs of its end. Patriarchy was a hierarchical order with "old white men" at the top, supported by recognized institutions such as universities, parliaments, and churches. Those times are gone. Today, power is based on the law of the stronger, physical violence, economic superiority, and arbitrariness. This is not patriarchy, but post-patriarchal chaos. Feminist strategies must respond to this.

In her intellectually sparkling and wittily pointed essay, political scientist Antje Schrupp takes a (self)critical stock of the women's movement and outlines perspectives for a forward-looking, constructive feminism, whose primary concern is a free society.

Antje Schrupp is a political scientist and journalist living in Frankfurt am Main. She primarily researches the political history of ideas concerning women and earned her doctorate on feminist socialists in the 19th century. She has also long been engaged with feminist economic ethics. In her blog "Out of Love for Freedom," she participates in current feminist debates and has called for, among other things, a confession of guilt from the church for centuries of patriarchal theology. In 2025, she received the Luise Büchner Prize for journalism.
