In the Footsteps of the Romans Kempten | Roman Temples and Bath Complex

Full-day excursion with Georg Fink to Kempten in the Allgäu, Germany.

Kempten is one of the oldest cities in Germany, alongside Speyer, Worms, Trier, Cologne, and Augsburg. The history of Kempten dates back at least to the time of the Roman conquest of the Alpine foothills around 15 BC. The city's heyday was in the 1st and 2nd centuries. In the later 3rd century, Kempten became a Roman border town with the establishment of the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes. A walled late Roman fort settlement was built on and around the hill now known as Burghalde in the river valley. Therefore, we will visit the Roman Museum to see the Gallic-Roman temple district and the small thermal baths. However, we are not only visiting Kempten because of the Romans; a city tour of the present-day town shows that Kempten developed into a significant imperial city during the Middle Ages. Under Bavarian administration, the twin city (imperial city and abbey city) eventually became the present-day Kempten at the beginning of the 19th century.
