Dungeon, Chains, and a Whiff of Freedom | Guided Tour of the Special Exhibition

Guided tour of the special exhibition at the Schattenburg Museum with Dr. Hans Gruber and Dipl. Graphic Designer Martin Caldonazzi. On the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the Feldkirch Freedom Charter, the Schattenburg Museum is presenting a special exhibition on this theme. For the majority of history, unfreedom has been a defining aspect of human life. Prisons, chains, walls, and barriers shaped existence. In the late Middle Ages, the bourgeoisie gradually succeeded in fighting for more extensive rights. These rights, granted through privileges, were referred to as "freedoms" in the Middle Ages. Through a lengthy process, these particular privileges evolved into "freedom" with a universal claim. This freedom became a cornerstone of modernity. One can understand the modern era as a process of liberation and various emancipations. However, these achievements have become lost in ambiguity and contradictions. Are we living in a time of failed liberations, as a recent German philosopher suggested? Do we truly determine our own fate?
