Unknown neighborhood Balzers with the Gutenberg Castle

Gutenberg Castle in Balzers is situated on a hill that has been used as a place of worship from the Neolithic period through to the Iron Age. Finds from the Roman era have also been made, and it is presumed that parts of the area were used as burial sites before the construction of the fortress. In the 12th century, a ring wall was built, followed by a keep with battlements. The name Gutenberg comes from a noble family that was first mentioned in 1296; later, the lords of Frauenberg resided at Gutenberg Castle. In 1314, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs. As the castle fell into disrepair after several wars, it was used as a source of building materials for the reconstruction of Balzers following the village fire in 1795, until the municipality of Balzers acquired the ruins in 1824. In 1905, Egon Rheinberger finally purchased it and restored it as faithfully as possible until 1912.
