Lecture | Wood Connections between Traditional Craftsmanship and Digital Transformation

On April 9, 2026, Sascha Bauer, Daniel Pauli, and Georg Bechter will be guests at the Werkraum Bregenzerwald. The Stuttgart architects Sascha Bauer and Daniel Pauli from STUDIO CROSS SCALE published "The Joinery Compendium" in 2024. The book brings together over 400 handcrafted wood joints from around the world and serves as the basis for the current exhibition "unplugged – the power of wood joints," where around 180 of these joints can be seen. After completing his architecture studies, Georg Bechter worked for several years in Stuttgart. Today, he has returned to Bregenzerwald with two established architecture and design firms.

In the lecture, the three speakers will provide insights into international examples of the use of wood joints in contemporary architecture. A focus will be on the opportunities that wood joints offer in terms of circular building. Additionally, the lecture will address the digital transformation of craftsmanship and the role of architects in an increasingly automated world. In a time characterized by abstraction and automation, a renewed focus on craftsmanship can help to reconnect architecture and craftsmanship. In particular, early collaboration is emphasized: not only during execution but already in a co-productive planning phase.

Following the lecture, there will be ample opportunity for exchange, discussion, and connecting professional conversations.
