ABOUT THE CONCERT
“... even Liszt feared the Totentanz, which, as is well known, hardly more than two pianists besides Bülow have dared to tackle ...,” stated the “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik” in 1881. Sofya Gulyak, winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition and acclaimed on the world’s great stages for her sovereign virtuosity, is one of the pianists who effortlessly master Liszt's enormous difficulties and dedicates her piano evening entirely to the dance dimensions of Franz Liszt. At the center is the monumental “Totentanz,” Liszt's powerful and visionary engagement with the medieval “Dies irae” motif. The work combines dance elements with an almost orchestral force and is considered one of the most spectacular creations in the piano repertoire. In contrast, the popular “Grand Galop Chromatique” unfolds the sparkling brilliance and overflowing energy that established Liszt's reputation as a genius virtuoso. The program is complemented by dance pieces that showcase his stylistic versatility – from highly virtuosic character dances to subtle rhythmic miniatures. An introductory lecture with Christian Reichart will take place at 5:45 PM before this concert.
