The Mysterious 13 - Twelve Maars and a Crater Lake
Every Sunday from March to November at 11 AM, guided tours to the volcanic lakes of the Eifel take place. Today's maar: Eichholz-Maar
As dramatic and wild as the formation of the maars was, today the water-filled maars appear to us as serene eyes of the Eifel, calm and mysterious. Many legends and stories surround these silent witnesses of the elemental struggle.
Listen to the experienced tour guides on our Sunday tours.
It is the year 1811. A certain J.J. Tranchot, a French geographer, travels through the Eifel to conduct the first topographical survey of the Rhineland on behalf of Napoleon. Between the towns of Duppach and Steffeln, he picks up a blue pencil to mark a small lake named Gussweiher on his map. Tranchot knew little about the formation of this small lake. However, you can learn about it on an adventurous hike to this beautiful spot in the Eifel. For this body of water is one of the mysterious 13 that have made the Vulkaneifel world famous.
