Illuminale

Every two years, around 15,000 people find what they are looking for in their search for enlightenment: since 2011, the Illuminale light art festival has given the Moselle and Petrispark, the palace gardens and the Porta Nigra forecourt, Neustraße and the cathedral city a luminous voice that tells stories from two millennia. But these are by no means the only ones that shine openly in daylight: with lanterns and laser art, with fairy lights and video mappings, with fire shows and projections, the obvious is coaxed into revealing its nocturnal secrets and the everyday into revealing its hidden treasures.

Because these stories can be found on every corner in Trier, since 2018 the Illuminale has been putting a different jewel of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the spotlight each year. What has remained constant for centuries becomes a light-flooded, iridescent marvel for two nights at the end of September – the next time on September 24-25, 2027. What a ray of hope!
