The youngest "Blue Eye of the Eifel" - and yet very old. Not long ago, the oldest of the Strohn volcanoes, the Trautzberg Maar, located in the Wartgesberg nature reserve, went unnoticed. However, today the youngest "Blue Eye of the Eifel" shines in the same spot. To gain additional agricultural land, the former wetland in the Trautzberg Maar was drained as part of the land consolidation in the early 1960s. In the summer of 2014, the drainage was removed to allow for rewetting. Successfully, as the Maar has since filled with water. Now the area around the water surface can be reclaimed by fauna and flora adapted to wet habitats.
