The Meerfelder Maar is the largest maar in the Westeifel, but only a part of it is filled with water. The village of Meerfeld is located within the maar bowl. In climate research, the Meerfelder Maar holds special significance. Over the millennia, the maar lake has been filled with sediments several meters thick. Core samples from these sediments have provided important insights into climate history. In 2008, the Meerfelder Maar was designated by the International Union of Geosciences as a regional type locality for defining the geological Pleistocene/Holocene boundary.
