The Windsborn is the only permanently water-filled crater lake north of the Alps. Unlike the maars, it is not a hollow form blasted into the original terrain, but the eruption crater of a volcanic mountain. This Windsborn scoria cone belongs to the Mosenberg row volcanic group. The sweat scoria from which the mountain is piled up can be clearly seen around the lake. The lake, along with its shallow water zone, provides a unique habitat for rare plants and insects. In suitable weather, many dragonflies and butterflies can be observed.
