In the versatile oeuvre of the artist Walter Ophey (1882–1930), the vibrant, essentialist drawings form a body of work alongside his paintings and prints that possess unmistakable expressive power. The path to the "open drawings," as Ophey once characterized them, is marked by bold experiments in color seeking his unique, distinct drawing style. To this day, the confidently executed drawings radiate great brilliance. The lecture presents Ophey's graphic work, some pieces of which can also be seen in the current exhibition dedicated to the artist in Kronenburg.
Dr. Daniel Cremer is a research associate at the Institute of Art History at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. He teaches and researches, among other topics, Rhineland art of the first half of the 20th century and artist networks of modernity. A publication on Walter Ophey as a draftsman, co-authored by Daniel Cremer and Gunda Luyken, will be released later this year.
