In the old town with its medieval squares and winding alleys, charming half-timbered houses shape the cityscape alongside representative buildings from the time of the Imperial Chamber Court.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe stayed in Wetzlar in the summer of 1772. His experiences inspired the poet to create his first major literary success, the epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther".
The unfinished cathedral, which is a Gothic church structure, is also fascinating as it reflects a piece of city history through its composition of Romanesque and Gothic elements.
