13. Music Days Hundsmarktmühle: "Masquerade"

From June 18 to 21, 2026, the 13th Musiktage Hundsmarktmühle will take place this year under the artistic direction of Cornelia Herrmann. Under the motto "Masquerade," the audience can expect a diverse program featuring four concerts and a youth workshop in the idyllic Hundsmarktmühle by Lake Fuschl. "There will be chamber music from different eras and cultural traditions, which – also in connection with pantomime – unfolds its narrative power and transports the audience to other worlds," describes Cornelia Herrmann this year's program.

To open the Musiktage Hundsmarktmühle on Thursday, June 18, the ensemble "The Erlkings" will perform. The musicians dedicate themselves to art songs of the Romantic era and translate them into a modern sound language with great sensitivity. Through unusual instrumentation and delicate English translations of the song texts, they open new pathways to songs by Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms.

The concert on Friday, June 19, titled "Hidden Worlds," will feature two piano trios for piano, violin, and cello. In Beethoven's so-called "Ghost Trio," sound images of mysterious apparitions arise. In contrast, Shostakovich's Piano Trio in E minor is a deeply moving work created in memory of a deceased friend and simultaneously reflects the inner conflicts of the composer.

Young talents from the region will be the focus of the afternoon workshop on Saturday, June 21, in cooperation with Musikum Hof and Musikum Salzburg.

The evening concert "Pulcinella & Arlecchino" on Saturday, June 20, takes a reference to the Commedia dell'Arte. In addition to Saint-Saëns' "Danse macabre" and Stravinsky's "Suite italienne," Mozart's rarely performed "Music for a Pantomime" will also be heard. The renowned Austrian director Markus Kupferblum will stage this work of the Commedia dell'Arte.

Finally, the audience can look forward to the matinee on Sunday, June 21, titled "Soul Masquerade." In addition to excerpts from Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet," Toshiro Mayuzumi's "Bunraku" for solo cello will be performed, which transports the audience into the world of traditional Japanese puppet theater Bunraku. Cornelia Herrmann creates a striking contrast with Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat major, in which the two alter egos, Florestan and Eusebius, reflect the multifaceted inner world of the composer.
