The composer Theodor Karl Lieven lived from 1902 to 1983 and was a member of the Foreign Legion, where he played drums and horn in its orchestra and also dedicated himself to the art of counterpoint. In 1943, amid the turmoil of war, he composed his large symphony in C minor, which he called "Imitation Symphony." This expressive work, based on tonality and characterized by polyphony, was found in his estate as part of his polyphonic-polytonal studies and premiered to enthusiastic acclaim from a large audience on July 21, 2025, in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The present symposium is dedicated to the exploration of the rediscovered oeuvre of this unique composer and his equally singular and forward-looking compositional technique.
