Mozart in St. Jost – Music from Glass

An absolute rarity of music history awaits you at the traditional concert on Pentecost Monday, May 25, at 4:00 PM in the Pilgrimage Chapel of St. Jost near Langenfeld/Eifel.
The focus is on an instrument that is rarely heard today: the glass armonica.
It produces sound by wetting fingers on rotating glass bowls – a sight as fascinating as the sound itself. The instrument has been documented since the 16th century and experienced a peak around 1760 when Benjamin Franklin significantly advanced its technical construction. With its delicate, ethereal tone, the glass armonica was particularly valued in the 18th century and often played by female virtuosos. Artists such as Marianne Kirchgeßner, Maria Theresia Paradis, and Marianne Davies toured the European courts and delighted their audiences.
A Prague newspaper wrote in 1782 about this extraordinary instrument:

“The sound is so penetratingly soft for anyone who has even the slightest musical feeling, and it carries the emotion in its gradual growth to the fortissimo so irresistibly that no one will be able to remember having heard a similar and so pleasant tone ever before.”

Even the doctor Franz Anton Mesmer used the ethereal sounds of the glass armonica for the treatment of patients. The program: The concert will feature one of the rarest works for this instrument: Adagio and Rondo in C Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – a musical gem that is extremely rarely experienced live.

Additionally, a quintet by Johann Christian Bach is on the program.
