The idyllic village of Waldbreitbach in the Wiedtal has been transforming into the Christmas village of Waldbreitbach for over 30 years. This is not a fenced marketplace or a village of huts, but the entire village itself is adorned with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes.
From November 28, 2026, to January 31, 2027, it will be atmospheric as everything shines in golden splendor. The special feature of the Christmas village Waldbreitbach is that all attractions are spread out extensively throughout the village in the fresh air. They will remain set up until the last Sunday in January, can be visited daily, and entrance is free.
For the ceremonial opening on Friday, November 27, 2026, at 6:00 PM, a torch procession will take place through the village, where all attractions will be illuminated for the first time this season. The music association Wiedklang will accompany the procession and also play at the end at the craft museum, where there will be mulled wine and Döppekuchen.
The large natural root nativity scene in the parish church of Mary Assumed into Heaven will again be set up in its usual place this year. Other highlights include the "Star of Bethlehem" – a hiking trail adorned with 3,500 light bulbs and over 30 nativity scenes, a floating nativity scene and a floating Advent wreath on the Wied, life-sized figures from the Ore Mountains on the church steps, the outdoor nativity scene, and the Schwibbogen nativity scene. A golden sparkle in the village center is provided by the Christmas illumination on the 18 m high guild tree with a diameter of 6 m and almost 10,000 LEDs.
In total, over 80 stations illuminate the "Nativity Path," which runs for about 2 km along the banks of the Wied and through the village. This also includes lovingly designed small nativity scenes in shops and private gardens. Guided tours are offered on the following days from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM for €4.00 per person: December 5/6, December 12/13, December 19/20, December 26/27, and January 2/3. Group tours can be booked at any time.
On the 2nd and 3rd Advent weekends (December 5/6 and December 12/13, 2026), the Christkindchen market will also take place in the Christmas village. On the stage, music associations and musicians from the region will perform for the festive market atmosphere. Additionally, the Christkindchen will visit the market every afternoon for all 4 days, distributing small gifts to the children and happily posing for photos with visitors.
Furthermore, this year the popular DIY bazaar will take place again on December 5 and 6 in the Kolpinghaus. There, you can purchase lovingly crafted gifts and warm up with coffee and home-baked cake.
The nativity museum "Gustel's Nativity and Bible World" will also be open this season. Monday to Friday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Groups can visit at any time by arrangement.
From December 14, 2026, to January 10, 2027, the Christmas village booth in Schmiddepark will be open from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Snacks and drinks will be offered there.
Once again this year: The large tombola with over 200 instant prizes worth almost €6,000. Tickets are available for only €1 in the village, half of which will be donated to the Vor-Tour der Hoffnung.
The Christmas village rally for children and teenagers up to 18 years will also take place again this season. Here, 10 questions about the Christmas village must be answered. If you submit the completed quiz sheet at the Tourist Information by January 31, 2027, you will receive a small surprise there! Have fun with it!
To round off a day trip to the Wiedtal, a lunch or coffee & cake in one of the restaurants and cafés is recommended. Reservations are highly advisable even for small groups. Free informational material is provided by the Tourism Association Wiedtal, and visitors can find souvenirs or Christmas gifts at the Tourist Information on site.
On January 30, 2027, VfL Waldbreitbach will host the Christmas tree throwing competition.
Finally, a current note on energy consumption: In the Christmas village Waldbreitbach, all stations will be set up as usual. The lighting is on daily from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The lighting will not be switched on in the morning. Since everything has already been converted to LED in recent years, the total electricity consumption is only 3,000 kWh for the full 8 weeks. This is comparable to what a four-person family consumes in a single-family house in a year and corresponds to electricity costs of about €1,000.
