Kommern, the gateway to the Eifel, is once again a magnet for flower lovers. In the historic town center, amidst the old half-timbered houses, the oldest of which dates back to 1529, the traditional flower, small animal, and farmers' market takes place. With the market, the gardening season begins.
The colorful splendor of the market leaves almost no wish unfulfilled. Flowers, herbs, and vegetables from southern countries have now become native in our gardens as well. While browsing, you can discover some rarities; the market is a true treasure trove. Exotic plant beauties that fully display their splendor in summer mix with exotic herbs, and the offering grows larger every year. Accessories for the garden, also available at the market, set accents in the garden and beautify it with steps, birdhouses, bird baths, globes & sculptures. The cultivation of tomatoes is also reaching a peak; while only the usual varieties were available at the market before, today the variety of tomato types is almost unmanageable. They come in colors and strange shapes, each finding different uses, with names such as beefsteak, money bag, trilly, Andean squirrel, pineapple, just to name a few. The interested hobby growers can certainly get a lot of information from the gardeners who offer tomato plants at the market. People are once again eating more consciously, diversely, and surely healthier.
A point of attraction for children are the animals, which of course are not present in as large a number as the plants. The bat help organization Hocheifel informs interested visitors about bat species as well as bat protection on buildings and about the work of the bat care station. Metal sculptures and decorations, among other things, offer products for home and garden, flower bulbs for summer and autumn bloom, balcony plants of all kinds, as well as information stands. The information stand of the Nature Conservation Association, NABU, is an organization aimed at protecting nature and the environment, ensuring clean air, clean water, and healthy soils, for which it advocates.
The Tambour Corps Kommern and the Greesberg musicians will create the musical afternoon.
Anyone wishing to participate as a market vendor can register at markt.kommern@web.de.
