Everyone knows the name Aretha Franklin. The work of this 18-time Grammy winner and recipient of over 100 prestigious awards has profoundly shaped global culture. Her musical legacy goes far beyond mere hits – she is the Queen of Soul! With her voice and her artistry, she fundamentally shaped the pop music of the 20th and 21st centuries while also becoming one of the most important symbols of the civil rights movement and women's equality.
Aretha Franklin's legacy lives on today: generations of female singers – from Whitney Houston to Beyoncé – cite her as their most significant source of inspiration.
"When Aretha sings, American history comes alive. No one embodies so perfectly the connection of African American spirituality, blues, R&B, and rock 'n' roll … that process through which so much suffering and sadness is transformed into a kind of beauty, vitality, and hope," said Barack Obama.
On this wonderful evening at the town hall stage, a singer worthy of her honor pays tribute to her: Gisele Jackson, who dedicates a homage to Aretha's extraordinary personality and music.
Gisele Jackson, who grew up in Brooklyn and is originally from Baltimore, toured as a "Raylette" alongside Ray Charles, frequently shared the stage with the incomparable Donna Summer, and performed with James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Her songs have topped the Billboard charts. She has performed in over 30 countries across four continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. As a sought-after guest at award ceremonies and Hollywood premieres, she sang at the inauguration of US President Bill Clinton, among other events.
Here’s what the international press says about her:
"Gisele Jackson is a DIVA..." – Billboard Magazine
"Jackson's dizzying voice has secured her a place in the pantheon of great divas. She is a force of nature..." – Bay Buzz Music
Today, Gisele works as a cultural ambassador, sharing and interpreting her beloved music around the world – from New York to Norway, from Morocco to Malaysia, from Barcelona to Beirut.
From a very young age, Giselle listened to Aretha Franklin from her father's Wurlitzer jukebox in his bar; she jokingly referred to Aretha as her first music teacher or her "babysitter." Not only Aretha's artistic work but her entire being had a significant impact on her:
"She is not just the queen of a music genre. She inspired the souls of people to be the best version of themselves … She touched souls during the difficult times of the civil rights movement … She provided comfort in the everyday struggles of Black Americans. Aretha Franklin defined SOUL on many levels and spoke to me in a way that has shaped my entire life."
Look forward to a true musical celebration and a very special evening on November 28 at the town hall, when these two wonderful voices and souls meet and let their immortal hits resonate.
Accompanied by a Big Band awarded the Prima Award, classics such as "Respect," "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman," "Say a Little Prayer," "Think," and "Chain of Fools" will be performed.
