In the parish church of St. Nicholas in Bad Ischl, the organ becomes the narrator: The expressionist film classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) unfolds its dark story in conjunction with live improvised organ music – performed by the German organist David Franke, one of the leading specialists in this art form.
Franke brings the shadowy imagery of the film to life with sonic imagination and stylistic depth – navigating between tension, silence, and musical expression. A unique experience that bridges film history and sound art.
At 7:30 PM, there will be a pre-program at the Old Post Office in Bad Ischl: Under the title "Sound World of the Roaring Twenties," Gerhard Hartmann (Austrian Organ Forum) will introduce the sound world of historical film theaters – with anecdotes, audio examples, and organ sounds to marvel at.
The KirchKlang Festival Salzkammergut 2026, under the artistic direction of Martin Haselböck, connects extraordinary musical moments with the unique places and landscapes of the Salzkammergut. www.kirchklang.at
