Lecture and Garden Tour in the Dark with Detectors

Bats "see" with their ears and fly with their hands.

We rarely notice these mammals with their extremely fascinating way of life, as they are active at dusk and during the night.

Julia Kropfberger from the Nature Conservation Association OÖ and the Coordination Office for Bat Protection and Research in Austria will inform us in her lecture about the animals, their way of life, the threats they face, and of course, possible conservation measures. Following the lecture, we will track these small insect eaters using ultrasound detectors during a tour of the Botanical Garden.

All native bats hunt and navigate using ultrasonic echolocation. Each bat species has its own unique call characteristics and uses specific frequency ranges, all of which are inaudible to humans. The bat detector converts the high-frequency calls of the bats into audible sounds.
