Halterbergkellergasse, 3714 Frauendorf an der Schmida

"...Where is the Schmida?" Music, Stories, and Images at the Schmida, July 17, 18, and 19, 2026, 3714 Frauendorf an der Schmida/western Weinviertel.

The namesake of the Schmida Valley in the western Weinviertel is the Schmida – a river that has been heavily regulated in recent years and has been reduced to a straight line in the section between Roseldorf and Ziersdorf. The title for the project comes from the question that visitors to the Schmida Valley repeatedly ask: "Where is the Schmida?" Because when crossing the Schmida over one of the many traffic bridges, the same disappointed expression can always be seen on the visitors' faces. The Schmida is hardly visible. With the project "Where is the Schmida," the habitat of the Schmida is given expression.

What's happening at the Schmida? The author Fesora Wesseler will read a fairy tale – suitable for all ages – about the Schmida as part of the hike. The story will be accompanied by music composed by Johanna Doderer for violin and harp. Together with her and the musicians, the audience will walk from station to station along the Schmida, through Frauendorf, and then up into the vineyards to the romantic cellar of the Schuh family. There, the highlight of the reading will take place, the resolution of the story, followed by a concert for violin and harp featuring the world premiere of Johanna Doderer's Schmida Variations. Afterwards, the exhibition opening will take place. The photographer Josef Leitner, who lives in Ravelsbach, has photographed the Schmida over the course of a year. Some images are displayed in pairs: their "current state" and also images that have been artificially edited – depicting how the Schmida could look in an unregulated state. To conclude the event, the author Milan Ráček, who resides in Sitzendorf an der Schmida, will read from his essay on the history of the Schmida Valley.
