The Come In! Gallery in the Impulsquartier Waidhofen is reopening - this time with the exhibition "Dear Grandma," by Julia Yelshanska - Opening on May 29, Cookbook Reading on May 30.

Whose responsibility is it to maintain the grandparents' living room when they can no longer do so?

With "Dear Grandma," Julia Yelshanska - for this exhibition using her mother's and grandmother's surname - realizes a media art spatial intervention that transforms her grandparents' living room into a collective space of memory. The starting point is historical research through objects and stories within the family. Considering the present, themes of caregiving and the transmission of knowledge across generations come into play. In this way, she creates a space that captures the nostalgia of the grandparents' house while also addressing the urgency of contemporary issues.

At the center of the installation is a film in which the artist cleans her grandmother's porcelain figurine collection - an action she has performed since childhood. The cinematic repetition makes a usually invisible form of care work visible and translates it into an observable, temporal structure. The work is complemented by photographic elements as well as the handwritten transmission of her great-grandmother's cookbook.

As part of a cookbook reading on May 30, visitors are invited to listen to the recipes, write them down, and ultimately take home their own cookbook, thus actively participating in the transmission of this archive. The reading will be accompanied by a culinary tasting.

Julia Yelshanska (*2001) lives and works in Linz and has been studying Experimental Design at the University of Art there since 2023. Her works span installation, film, and participatory formats, revolving around portraiture, memory, and the intertwining of individual and collective stories.
